Just talk

Just talk

Recently I participated in the following discussion
Just thought someone other than myself would find it interesting to.

Do you agree with me that our profession is not much appreciated by our bosses?
Susan Kern • Sometimes a simple "Thank You" can mean the world!!
Melissa Lyte • It depends on who you work for. I have worked for some people who were truly appreciative of what I did for them but now I am in a situation where I don't think my boss sees the value of having an assistant. I have never felt so undervalued in a position and it has left me unable to figure out what my next step should be.
Gladys Ayisi Palme • Melissa, that is what i am talking about. some of them make you feel so undervalued. I think we should do something about this since at the end of the day we do practically all the work and thinking.
Grace Nthakyo • i agree with you guys. sometimes they think you are the dustbin where they have to throw their frustrations and this makes you instead of giving them 100% you start to give 30% of your service. i wish sometimes they would put themselves in our shoes and feel the way we feel.
Leonie Adonis • Being a secretary or Pa is much like being a wife
Just like a husband would expect that food will be on the table when he gets home, that the kids will be clean and magically his clothes will be washed ,ironed and laid out. They believe dishes do themselves and Santa or the Easter bunny will pay the bills on time and get the groceries on the way from the parent meeting.
Your Boss comes in switches on his air conditioner and pc, makes a few calls , orders tea and coffee, gives a list of things to do and not do, gives you the brief idea of what should be a memo, and goes home, patting himself on the back for his days work.
He completely forgets who made sure the phone and electricity bill was paid on time, who orders the canteen immunities so that he is able to have his coffee on time who writes, edits, copies and distributes the memo, who RSVP’s all the functions he’ll be going to this week .
And then still wants to know why you were on lunch 5mins to long because he couldn’t remember what the company vat number is.
Though we might not be able to change everyone’s view of us, there is one thing we know for sure purely by the fact that what we do is a recognized profession is that ………………………….
They sure as hell can’t do without us

Bertie Hayes • Hello everyone,
We are in control of our emotions and values. Is it really necessary to be patted or thanked for doing a good job. I'm glad to have a job! Yes, there are folks who will neglect or forget all that we do. Remember to take care of you and know you are good at what you do and is enough. Really! Learn to be happy where you are planted! It's okay and all will be better soon. But first, be in control of you and everything else will be okay. Try it! It works.
Leonie Adonis • Being personally content and in control has nothing to do with your employer showing you appreciation.
E.g. Mary is extremely good at job she’s passionate about what she does and how she gets it done. She is inherently a good care giver and organizer but even in this content state with her own capabilities her employer can break down a good working spirit just by being unappreciative.
It is more likely the employers lack of the aforementioned that causes of absence of appreciation. Appreciation in the even the least measure contributes to a meaningful and productive relationship in the work place with mutual benefits for both the employee and their employer.

  1. Interesting perspective... Someone how I don't see it happening within the corporate climate. Especially where the main focus is the bottomline... Which as work in general companies go... is the basic drive for everything.

Maybe Google Inc still has a soul...
